“Practice” “Lesson” “Rehearsal”
What do these terms mean?
PRACTICE is a daily habit that happens at home
· Practice reinforces skills so you can build on them
· Get it right, repeat it right
· Practice can include a repetition of what you did in your last lesson
· Practice time should primarily be review of “old” pieces
Your job - or your grown-up’s job - is to create and maintain a daily practice habit at home.
LESSONS happen once a week and introduce new skills and repertoire
· If you are not prepared for your lesson from a solid week of practice, your lesson might look more like practice.
· Lessons can reinforce practice technique (“this is what you should be doing at home”)
· Lessons help you notice things that you might otherwise ignore
· Lessons give you clear goals for what to work on at home during the week
Your job is to show up to lessons well-prepared, ready to learn new skills.
REHEARSAL is when a group practices ensemble skills (balance, group intonation, rhythm, etc.) together
· Rehearsal happens after you have learned your part
· While rehearsal can include sight reading or technique points, it is not practice
Your job is to learn your music at home and pay close attention during rehearsal.
ROLE OF THE CAREGIVER
For most students, it is the responsibility of their grown-up to facilitate daily practice at home.
This means it’s the adult’s job to:
· Create and maintain a daily practice routine
· Play the reference recordings
· Take notes and videos during lessons
· Find ways to make practice fun, positive, and engaging
· Be your kid’s biggest cheerleader
