HISTORY: Medieval/Renaissance

We are about to begin exploring the Medieval and Renaissance periods, where we will follow Owen and Megan as they go on a musical quest.

Folk Song: "Early One Morning". A folk song is a song that pretty much everyone knows, but no one knows who wrote it. What folk songs do you know?

Here's a version of the song that really captures the darkness of the lyrics (some renditions out there sound very, very happy... and this is not a particularly happy song!):

Madrigal: "The Silver Swan" by Orlando Gibbons. A madrigal is a form of secular vocal music. Madrigals often featured word-painting, and usually were about love or death... or both. Orlando Gibbons lived in England from 1583-1625, and was the most recognized composer of his time.

Gregorian Chant and Medieval Manuscripts. Western music was first notated by monks. How has it changed over time? For more in-depth information about early illuminated manuscripts, go here: http://www.leavesofgold.org/learn/children/overview2.pdf
